Chamber, Agricultural

Chamber, Agricultural
   / Landwirtschaftskammer.
Popularly known as the Peasants Chambers, the various branches of this decentralized organization represent the interests of small farmers and forestry enterprises in economic and political affairs that affect them. Like the other chambers, which represent employers, labor and salaried workers, and the trade unions, the agricultural chamber is legally charged to perform this function. Though demands for such an arrangement date from the late 19th century, it was only after the end of World War I that provincial governments throughout Austria approved it. Between 1920 and 1932, chambers for farming and small forestry concerns were established throughout all of the provinces of the First Republic. Even today, agricultural affairs are regulated regionally rather than by the central government in Vienna.
